The complete system has three components: the DTS Transceiver Checker , the Solar Power System (for off-grid installs), and custom signage (the 36-inch printed sign that travelers read before they pass the checker).

DTS Transceiver Checker

The DTS Transceiver Checker is an IP66-rated avalanche-transceiver detection system designed for trailheads, ski patrol shacks, alpine huts, and backcountry gates. It also logs all detections and provides a relay system for control of external devices such as access gates. This system is powered by BCA’s DTS Tracker, configured over Wi-Fi, and upgradable over the air.

Detected devices are logged with time and date to help operators understand usage patterns and traffic.

Up to 50,000 events stored on-device with auto-overwrite. Each event includes timestamp, detection type. Download the full log as JSON from the Wi-Fi configuration page any time. Useful for gate-traffic reporting for land managers, beacon-check statistics for avalanche educators, training data for patrol directors, and sustainability reporting for agencies that track safety-infrastructure use.

Three power profiles matched to typical deployment scenarios.

Three profiles for three situations: Shore (always-on, unlimited power — for hardwired high-traffic installs), Normal (battery-optimized with Deep Sleep enabled — the default for most sites), and Low Power (Pro Mode only, with automatic low-power search after several minutes of no detection — maximizes runtime for solar and remote installs).

Detects and alarms when two or more transceivers are in range — a cue to travelers to pass one at a time.

When the unit detects two or more transmitting transceivers at once, it pulses an outward LED pattern on the red “X” and plays a distinct alert tone. That combined visual and audible cue tells travelers to spread out and pass the checkpoint one person at a time so each person’s transceiver can be verified individually.

On-board relay triggers external devices when a transceiver is detected.

Each unit includes a normally-open (NO) relay that can be wired to an external device: signage lights, audible alarms, a gate unlock, a visitor counter, a camera trigger. Configure the relay to close for a specified duration whenever a transceiver is detected.

User-configurable off / on times to maximize battery life.

Deep Sleep is a scheduled low-power state that cuts power draw outside of operating hours. Set a sleep time and a wake time in 24-hour format via the Wi-Fi web interface; the unit sleeps and wakes on that schedule. Ideal for resort access points outside lift hours, backcountry gates during night hours, or any site that doesn’t need 24/7 detection.

Built-in Wi-Fi self-hosted web page lets maintainers configure the device and install firmware updates in the field.

Each DTS Transceiver Checker hosts its own Wi-Fi access point. Activate Wi-Fi, connect, and the full configuration page is yours — sound volume, sleep and wake schedule, event logging, relay triggers, Pro Mode feature keys. Firmware updates work the same way. No special software, no app install, no laptop tether.

NEMA 4X rated enclosure and 12 V power matched to previous-generation DTS units — straight upgrade path for existing customers.

The current DTS Transceiver Checker is drop-in compatible with previous-generation DTS signs and solar power systems. Same IP66 / NEMA 4X enclosure rated to −40°C, same 12 V DC input with reverse-polarity protection. Existing DTS sites can swap in a new checker without changing signage, wiring, mounts, or solar hardware.

Optional BLE / Bluetooth detection for fuller-picture logging and beacon-less traffic alerts.

With the Pro Mode feature key enabled, the checker scans for Bluetooth Low Energy devices (typically phones) alongside avalanche transceivers. Two use cases: alert when a Bluetooth device passes the checkpoint but no transceiver is present — useful for educational programs and sites where that data matters; and more complete visitor logging for land managers quantifying trail access.

Site-specific firmware customization for institutional customers with unique integration needs.

The DTS Transceiver Checker runs custom firmware designed and maintained by Hyak Consulting. Have a site-specific integration request — an API callback when the relay trips, a custom LED pattern, a specialized logging format, integration with your existing resort systems? Contact us.

Solar Power System

The Solar Power System pairs with a DTS Transceiver Checker to deliver off-grid operation. Designed for alpine winter conditions, sized for the checker’s duty cycle, installs in quickly with standard solar panels.

Waterproof, standard connections enable quick install

Waterproof detachable connectors — one to the DTS Transceiver Checker, two to the solar panel. No soldering, no custom wiring harnesses, no specialized tools. Install in the fall, disconnect for end-of-season service, reconnect the next season.

All components are contained in a IP66 rated, lockable enclosure

SLA battery, MPPT solar charge controller, and all weatherproof wiring contained in a single weatherproof enclosure. Designed for alpine winter conditions with a margin for short-daylight latitudes.

Compatible with standard solar panels for flexibility and low cost

Supply any standard 50 W solar panel and the controller handles the rest: charging the battery, regulating voltage to the checker, managing low-light periods.

Custom signage

The “ARE YOU BEEPING?” sign is a key part of the system. It provides a mount for the checker, usage instructions, and customized and localized information. Each sign is designed and made to order for your site.

36″ × 36″ Dibond aluminum composite with full-color UV-resistant printing.

Printed on 36 × 36-inch Dibond aluminum composite — the same material used for highway signage and outdoor advertising engineered to survive years of UV, snow load, and rough weather. Full-color UV-resistant printing resists fade through multiple seasons.

Every sign is made to order — your site name, your logo, your wording.

Start with our standard layout and then add your customization like organization’s logo, secondary language(s), safety-agency branding. We send a digital proof for approval before any sign goes to print. Contact us for current lead time.

Integrated strut channels top and bottom accept standard mounting hardware.

Horizontal strut channels integrated into the top and bottom edges of each sign accept standard U-bolts, post clamps, or custom brackets. Mount to a single 4×4 post, a pair of 2×2 posts, a free-standing A-frame, a building wall, or an existing kiosk frame.
